45 are using Pandora

“It was a very frightening time,” Marcus said. “We
needed to raise money, but we had this huge overhang from a
royalty system that could have broken the company.”

‘He’s the Guy’

Dark Days

Years later, Marcus met Westergren, who was then running
Savage Beast, the predecessor to Pandora. In 2003, the two men
started talking strategy. Westergren, 45, had spent three years
creating the Music Genome Project, which analyzed the musical
attributes of songs and used those traits to select other tunes
that a listener may like.

Marcus and Gotcher, venture capitalists who both play the
drums, stuck with Pandora founder Tim Westergren through the
company’s evolution from a music-recommendation site into a
full-fledged radio service. Westergren, a musician, composer and
producer, spent years creating the technology while maxing out
his credit cards. He also had to lobby Congress to change a
royalty system that threatened to bankrupt his company.

New terms were reached in July 2009, when online-radio
companies agreed to pay a per-song royalty or 25 percent of
revenue, whichever is greater, for music they stream. The money
is paid to SoundExchange, a nonprofit group for music labels.

Pandora aims to raise as much as $100 million in the IPO,
an event that looked improbable until 2009, when Internet-radio
companies struck a more favorable royalty agreement with
copyright holders that lasts through 2015.

In mid-2008, Pandora introduced an application for Apple
Inc.’s iPhone and within five months had 2 million downloads.
The number of users has jumped more than 50 percent to 80
million since the middle of last year, and advertisers have
followed. Revenue almost tripled to $90.1 million in the first
nine months of last year, compared with the same period a year
earlier. Of the 50 top Web advertisers, 45 are using Pandora,
Westergren said in an October interview.

Future Challenges

Even now, though, Pandora is no sure bet. The company lost
$328,000 in the first three quarters of last year and expects to
rack up more operating losses until at least 2012. Pandora also
faces increased competition as more music moves online. CBS
Corp. and Clear Channel Communications Inc. have Internet-
streaming products, and Skype Technologies SA co-founder Janus Friis raised $17.5 million for a social-music service called
Rdio Inc. earlier this month.

Marcus continues to look for investments in music, as well
as performing it himself. He was formerly the drummer for the
Flying Other Brothers, which included Silicon Valley investor
Roger McNamee. He now plays in the Open Source Band with Randi
Zuckerberg, the sister of Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg.

To survive, Pandora negotiated better terms with the music
industry, narrowed its losses and attracted more than 80 million
users. Its plan for an initial public offering, announced last
week, would make it unique among Internet-music companies: None
has gone public since Napster went bankrupt in 2002.

“Anytime a company becomes successful in a space, it’s
good for the space,” said Keyvan Mohajer, CEO of SoundHound
Inc.,best digital camera batteries, a San Jose, California-based company that’s backed by
Marcus. “If Pandora has a successful IPO, it’s going to be even
better.”

“If you’re going to invest in the music industry, he’s the
guy you do it with,” said Tim Haley, co-founder of Menlo Park,
California-based Redpoint Ventures, where Gotcher once worked.
“He’s got so many tentacles into the music space in so many
different ways.”

Savage Beast

The following year, Marcus helped recruit Gotcher to join
the board and participate in a $12 million investment. Gotcher
had gained fame for his work at Digidesign by winning a Grammy
Award for technical achievement in 2000. He later won Emmy and
Oscar Awards for his contributions to the industry, the best smart phone, and since
2009 has served as chairman of Dolby Laboratories Inc. in San
Francisco.

“We could tell he was somebody who was just not going to
fail and he managed to stay alive through tremendous
adversity,” said Marcus, a partner at Walden Venture Capital in San Francisco. “We made a bit of a contrarian bet.”

The offering would bring a payday to Marcus, whose firm
owns 19 percent of the company, and Gotcher, who controls about
1 percent. Deborah Roth, a spokeswoman for Oakland, quad band cell phones, California-
based Pandora, declined to comment.

Media IPOs have made money for their investors this year.
Nielsen Holdings NV, the television-ratings company, has jumped
10 percent since it started trading on Jan. 26. Demand Media
Inc., which provides low-cost stories and video content for
websites, debuted the same day and has gained 17 percent.

Pandora also said in the filing that its auditor has
identified “material weakness” in the way it handles financial
reporting. Pandora said it’s working to remedy the concerns.

A week after the agreement with SoundExchange, Pandora
closed a $35 million investment led by Greylock Partners, a
Menlo Park firm that had backed LinkedIn Corp. and Facebook Inc.

To contact the editor responsible for this story:
Thomas Giles at tgiles5@bloomberg.net

While Pandora’s popularity was building, so was the
uncertainty around its future. A 2007 ruling by the U.S.
Copyright Royalty Board increased song royalty rates -- a cost
the company struggled to absorb. Westergren lobbied the
government to allow the rates to be renegotiated, saying Pandora
would go out of business without the change.

Nielsen, Demand Media

“This really lit me up big time when I saw it,” Marcus
said. “I felt like there could be something really wonderful
built on it.”

The music industry brought Marcus, 45, and Gotcher, samsung smart phone, 51,
together for the first time in the late 1980s. Gotcher founded
Digidesign Inc. in 1984, where he developed audio-editing
software that allowed musicians to achieve studio-quality
recordings at home. In 1988, Marcus consulted for the company,
running the East Coast trade show booths and testing some of the
software. Gotcher took Digidesign public in 1993 and later sold
it to Avid Technology Inc.

After selling his partners on the deal, Marcus led a $7.8
million financing round in 2004 that valued Pandora at less than
$2 million, prior to the investment. Some of the money went to
pay employees who had been working without a salary and to repay
debt that the company had accrued, Marcus said.

Larry Marcus and Peter Gotcher’s
early bet on Pandora Media Inc. appeared to be a bust three
years ago when the business was buried in music-royalty fees.
Now they’re preparing for its debut as a public company.

Not a minute too soon

March 31, 2011 by yaluba   Comments (0)

Not a minute too soon, discount eyeglasses! As expected, hdmi and av cables, Pandora has updated the much-loved music app for the iPhone to version 3.1. This build will (drumroll) allow you to keep playing music when you move on to something else.

Of course this will only work on devices that support multitasking on iOS 4, which means the iPhone 3GS and the new iPhone 4 available later this week.

As I write this, car alarms and security, Apple has just delivered the OS update for current iPhones, digital camera batteries, so those with the iPhone 3GS are good to go. This update will make a whole lot of people very happy. I tried out the 'music in the background' feature with the golden master of iOS 4,touch screen phone, and it worked like a charm. Pandora did ask me to re-enter my password. Your mileage may vary on that one.

who could tell the future

March 31, 2011 by yaluba   Comments (0)

Terrified, Pandora closed the lid. But the gods, feeling a little sorry for what they were about to do, had put, among the evil creatures, a good one whose task was to heal the wounds of the body and soul. This wonderful creature was Hope. When Pandora's box was opened again, Hope managed to fly away and to go around the world and heal the wounds produced by the plagues. But, as she escaped much later, she is always the last one to arrive. That's why, when people are harassed by problems,Power Tool Batteries, the only thing that helps them go ahead is hope.

There is also another version about Pandora's box: the gods filled it with good things, as a wedding gift for Epimetheus, and told Pandora not to open it. When she disobeyed, all the good things flew back to the Olympus, car dvd players, so there was left nothing good for the mankind. With one exception: Hope, as Pandora managed to put the lid back before Hope flew away (in this case, the gift was really a gift, but we shouldn't forget the gods wanted to punish mankind. You've got it, right? The punishment was the woman. Ouch,in car dvd players! I protest!)

Pandora's Box
Pandora's box was a poisonous gift given by gods to mankind... but let's start with the beginning.

Zeus was terribly mad when the titan Prometheus stole the fire from the gods and gave it to man. That's why he decided to punish all mankind (which, until then, had lived in a state of perpetual bliss and innocence, the Golden Age). He asked Hephaistos to make the woman, out of clay. Until then, there were no women on earth. Hephaistos made her taking as a model the beautiful goddesses, and each god gave her a quality: beauty, grace, manual dexterity, boldness, persuasion, curiosity, cunning and deceit (well, these are not exactly qualities). She was given the name Pandora (all-gifted). Then the gods gave her a mysterious box (or jar), as a wedding gift, and told her not to open it.

Prometheus, who could tell the future, refused to accept the woman. He also warned his brother, Epimetheus, about turning down Zeus' gifts. But when Epimetheus saw Pandora, he instantly fell in love with her and married her.

At that time, the proverb "curiosity killed the cat" didn't exist yet. So what would a woman do, as soon as you tell her not to do something? She'd do it, of course. So Pandora opened the box (or the jar, whatever it was), which contained, instead of real gifts, just evil and plagues. All of them flew out of Pandora's box and spread into the world: crime, poverty, pain, hunger, sickness, laptops batteries, vice. They al looked like small, winged creatures.

smartphones and a potential IPO

March 31, 2011 by yaluba   Comments (0)

Pandora Media Inc., an Internet streaming radio service used by more than 80 million listeners, car lights led, announced plans Friday to sell shares in an initial public offering this year.

TechnologyThe business and culture of our digital lives, wifi phone,
from the L.A. Times

We've been through a long road to get here. This company should have been dead long ago. But now I can be more ambitious about what we can accomplish. It's surreal.

After years of struggling for survival,Car Accessory, the Oakland, Calif., company is finally on the verge of breaking even and sees the offering as a way to raise $100 million to grow its business.

-- Nathan Olivarez-Giles

Because Pandora is largely a free service, only about 10% of its revenue came from subscriptions and other paid services. The vast majority of the company's revenue came from advertising.

The Times' Alex Pham has the full story over on our sister blog, Company Town. As Pham reports:

RELATED:

Pandora delivers its Internet radio service online via Web browsers and through apps on smart phones and tablets. The free service also generates playlists based on a users' musical tastes and songs they've played before.

In its prospectus filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Pandora reported a $16.8-million loss on $55.1 million in revenue for its fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2010. From Feb. 1, 2010 through Oct. 31, Pandora narrowed its losses to $300,000 on $90.1 million in revenue.

To read the rest of the story on Pandora's first offering of public stock, head over to Company Town and read Pham's complete report.

Pandora, which has a catalog of 800,000 songs from more than 80,000 artists, has roughly half the market for Internet radio in 2010, according to a study published in November by Ando Media. Though the service is wildly popular, it has yet to make a profit.

In January, at the Consumer Electronics Show, digital camera battery, Pandora Chief Executive Tim Westergren looked forward to issuing the company's IPO, saying:

Pandora, car alarm security, the popular streaming radio service, is going public and hoping that doing so will help the company post a profit for the first time.
